Summary

Description

The monument consists of the remains of a medieval tower house situated 100m E of Auchencloigh Farm.

The fragmentary remains consist of several massive sections of lime- bonded whinstone rubble walling. The building appears to have been rectangular and of considerable strength. It has external measurements of 12m N-S by 10.5m E-W over walls 1.4m thick. The walls vary in height from 0.6 to 1.5m. The remains are heavily overgrown with scrub and a drystone sheepfold has been built into the SW side.

The area to be scheduled is square with sides measuring 40m, centred on the castle, as shown in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance as a site of considerable archaeological significance. It preserves evidence of, and has the potential to provide further evidence through excavation for, defensive architecture, domestic occupation and social organisation during the medieval period.
